The most honored senior rector of this institution, REV. FR. REY MAGUS RESPICIO, the very amiable principal, SISTER CATALINA SUPERABLE, the spiritual director in the person of FR. RUBEN ABAYA, the assistant spiritual director, REV. FR. XAVIER VALBUENA, the diligent adviser of the Science and Math Club, MR. NOEL GUILLERMO, the SMC President, KOJIN Q. DOMINGO, fellow educators, fellow science and math enthusiasts, dear students, my bosom friend, friends in Christ, GOOD AFTERNOON…
It is an honor on my part, to share with you my thoughts for this afternoon. As I am looking at old but definitely handsome faces, for sure some of you were my pupils at the LES, I was encouraged to unravel the nucleus and electron filled essence of this occasion.
Science and technology is what our life is in this generation. Remove these terms and we will find ourselves on the brink of uncertainty and on the verge of chaos trying in our own manpower to go against the gravity of tough living, as if we are starting a new civilization.
Science is the knowledge, facts, information and all the know-how that we have at this moment which was verified through constant experimentation. As science enthusiasts, we do not just rely on the magnitude and the intensity of the information but on its veracity and practical application in our lives. There are multitudes of knowledge that are readily available in the information superhighways of our times ranging from medical and health sciences of organisms up to the recent situations of our neighboring heavenly bodies. To date, they are as rampant as mushrooms stricken by a lightning as a part of the biogeochemical cycle. Just a click to our high tech equipment and we have access on the latest trend of science and technology. We have knowledge on the existence of ASIMO. Who is Asimo? He is one of the most sophisticated robots for it can imitate movements of humans. We will not be taken aback when in several moments from now Asimo can do all the functions of man in this world. Through science and technology, we are kept abreasted with the fatal effect of melamine which was originally used as industrial input in the manufacture of plastics and tiles and now found out to have been added in milk products to deceive consumers of the high protein content of milk and other dairy products.
In our daily encounter in the classroom, our printed and soft references or even our teachers and classmates are the most common sources of scientific knowledge. We only need to avail them through our technical skills in the manipulation of technology-based materials. To hasten this ability, we should also include mathematical abilities. We should take into consideration that science and mathematics are sister discipline of learning. Scientific knowledge would not be possible without our numerical skills especially in the physical and chemical aspects of things around us. They can facilitate our understanding of almost every phenomenon within the ambit of human mental powers to explain.
Everybody who are here today know of the fact that water boils at 1000C at sea level. How do we apply this science concept? Anyone? Yes, it can be applied in cooking, like when we are steaming rice or cooking our favorite stew viand, that when the water boils we should lower the fire because it would be impossible for us to increase the boiling point of water. This will enable us to save a little from the very expensive price of LPG.
It is a common observation that during the past days, we feel very warm. The air is wet. Water vapor saturates the air making us feel warm. Evaporation is so slow. What should we do? Simple. Apply you knowledge in science to help yourselves. Avid moving too often to minimize the production of heat that will make us feel even warmer. Remember you knowledge on the movement of molecules and the scientific theories that govern them.
They say living in this world is a practical application of science. Yes, it is because without technology, our scientific tenets and principles including the mathematical postulates and formulas would become futile. This year’s theme of countrywide science celebration, “ Making Science and Technology Work for You” depicts the essence of using science and technology to harmonize our circumstances for advancement. My fellow science and math enthusiasts let us not ignore the benefits of science and technology. Instead, let us use it to fulfill the destiny vested in us by the Almighty.
They say that Divine Theory and Scientific principles are two repelling forces likened to the positive and negative charges in electromagnetism, but I tell you they can go well together because God created both for our advantage. You, as future preachers of the god news about our Lord and Savior can attain these objectives to advance the goodwill of humanity not to annihilate civilization nor efface your genealogy, our genealogy.
At this juncture, I would like to express my profound gratitude to Mr Guillermo for inviting me in an occasion such as this because my interest is always to science. Thank you so much. I would also like to congratulate the teachers and students behind this affair because you heeded well to the call of knowledge for your holistic development as learners.
Always bear in mind, use science and technology in attaining your dreams and aspirations and you will find out that they are magnificent blessing of God which will metamorphosed you from GOOD to the BEST person that you can be.
God Bless
Good Afternoon…
